SUPER VALUE BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND ON THE SOUTH DEVON RAILWAY
It’s great value all the way on the South Devon Railway (SDR) at Buckfastleigh and Totnes this early May bank holiday, with entry to Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies and the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm included in the price of a train ticket.
Throughout the bank holiday weekend (29th April to 1st May), every train ticket gives visitors entry to both of the railway’s neighbouring attractions at no extra cost, as well as a free ride on the SDR’s miniature railway which runs around the gardens at Buckfastleigh station, weather permitting.
Children will also be able to enjoy face painting and a children’s entertainer, and the railway’s collection of vintage locomotives and carriages will be on display. The former signal box, which used to control movements when the line continued northwards to Ashburton, will be open where visitors can experience pulling the signal levers and experiencing how old mechanical signal boxes work.
In the museum, the former Exeter Gas Works locomotive No 1, ‘Ashley’, will be on display next to 1868-built ‘Tiny’, the only surviving genuine locomotive built to Brunel’s broad gauge.
General manager, Ernest Elsworth-Wilson, said: “Our family fun weekends are popular with families and visitors of all ages, and we are pleased to be able to offer such excellent value for a really varied full day out. Buying a train ticket means a 14 mile trip along the beautiful valley of the Dart behind a steam locomotive, the chance to meet very friendly rare breed animals, see the otters at rest and play and to enter the tropical environment of the butterfly house – and finish it off with a miniature railway ride. It’s a fantastic value day out!”
