A Railway Legend is Getting Ready to Come Back to the Tracks!

Did you know the locomotive that inspired one of the best-loved Thomas & Friends characters is currently being brought back to life at the South Devon Railway?

Great Western Railway tank engine No. 1420, which is widely considered the inspiration behind Oliver the Great Western Engine in Thomas & Friends, is now in the final stages of an extensive overhaul. After almost two decades out of service, this famous locomotive is getting closer to steaming back into action. For fans of the character, it is a chance to see a real piece of the history behind the stories brought to life.

A Railway Favourite

Built in the 1930s and based at the South Devon Railway since 1969, No. 1420 has become a favourite among generations of railway enthusiasts and families. During its early preservation years at the railway, the locomotive was also affectionately known as Bulliver, a name that remains fondly remembered by many long-time visitors. Now, after years of careful restoration, the locomotive is beginning to look like an engine ready to return to the rails, and we couldn’t be more excited!

The overhaul has involved extensive work, from an entirely new set of side tanks and cladding to major work inside the cab, fitting pipework, rebuilding the combined brake valve and installing a host of components that will all eventually return the engine to working order! Engineers have also manufactured a brand-new vacuum reservoir.

The finishing touches are now underway, with painting progressing ahead of lining, transfers and varnishing. The exciting part? You can see the restoration for yourself!
