The backbone of the South Devon Railway is the volunteers who play a key role in the operation of the railway in a range of positions and the funding of a variety of projects.

Members of the South Devon Railway Association provide the train crews (drivers, firemen, guards and travelling ticket inspectors) on our trains, as well as a range of other tasks, from booking office clerks and station staff, to catering staff. In addition, there are engineering jobs in the workshop, platelayers on the permanent way, restoration work in the Carriage & Wagon department and a whole range of jobs in the Signal & Telegraph department, including signalmen.

You don’t need any special skills – but if you do, let us know as we can most probably put them to good use, whether they are railway skills, engineering, building, DIY, general management and administration or even gardening! Volunteers often have an interest in a specific area so we will give them any necessary training to enable them to help.

If you’re not already a member, the first thing to do is join the Association. Full details are on the website of the South Devon Railway Association. Alternatively, drop us an email and we'll come back to you.
