PWM 3773, Type 27A Wickham Trolley, works no 6652

This 10hp Ford engined Wickham trolley was delivered new to Exeter St David's in May 1953 as B12W PWM3773.

Little is known of its history and working life but it was purchased from the Western Region of British Railways by the Glendower Locomotive Group, who now own it, and in November 1978 it arrived on the South Devon Railway.

Unlike the other Wickhams on the railway, it has seating for only two people, the rear compartment being used for the carriage and storage of materials.

Wickham trolleys are designed to travel in both directions - the Ford engined examples on the line have three forward and one reverse gear in each direction. This one is more difficult drive 'backwards' as there is restricted view in this direction. The trolleys generally carried mobile turntables to enable them to be turned to face forwards when travelling any distance.

It is currently out of service.
