GWR Monster No 594

The delightfully named Monster is in fact a specialist vehicle built by the GWR in 1918 as a covered scenery van, presumably used by travelling theatre companies.

The Monster, as named by the GWR, arrived at Buckfastleigh in 1999 in somewhat poor condition. Little is known of its history at this stage, but since it came to Buckfastleigh, it has undergone a complete rebuild, involving the replacement of much of the vehicle’s timber work.

The finished product is a testament to the hard work that went into the restoration. It is now stabled at Totnes Littlehempston, where it is used as a visitor centre and display vehicle.
