South Devon Railway launches Rail Cruises for August evenings

The scenic South Devon Railway (SDR) is launching a new service next week for the whole of August with a series of entertaining, evening sunset 'Rail Cruises' down the line.

Visitors will have the opportunity to step aboard a steam-hauled 'auto train', complete with panoramic windows, to enjoy an evening guided 'Rail Cruise' from where they will be able to discover lots of fascinating facts about the line from an expert guide and also see the superb views and wildlife from the train at a slow and very relaxing pace as the sun slowly sets!

The new 'Rail Cruises' will run every Wednesday evening on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th August, and also include a barbecue prepared from local ingredients by our own chef at Buckfastleigh station beforehand, with drinks available on the train bar where you can enjoy wine, beer and soft drinks.

SDR Railway manager, Chris Williams, said: "Each 'rail cruise' will be a very convivial evening as one of our experienced guides with a wealth of knowledge of the history of the line, and of the area around the railway, will take visitors on a journey along the stunning seven-mile line to Totnes, stopping at several interesting locations on the way.

"The line runs through outstanding hidden scenery and there are many tales to tell, like how the Royal Train was regularly stabled on the line when the Royal Family were visiting the area, and the story of the rope worked tramway that once connected with the line. Also, this is another way of seeing the railway and learning about its characters and how it has shaped the communities it served.

"The valley is rich in wildlife too and it will be a great opportunity to keep a keen look out for darting blue kingfishers, birds of prey such as Buzzards and much more. There'll be plenty of time to ask questions and see the beautiful valley of the River Dart from the comfort of a steam train."

The cost of the Rail Cruises is £30.00 for adults and £20.00 for children, including the barbecue.

Tickets, which must be booked in advance, are available by visiting the railway's website at

The barbecue starts at 6.00 pm and the train leaves at around 7.00pm, returning to Buckfastleigh at about 9.30pm. N.B. Our Rail Cruises are probably not suitable for children under 11.
