Winter diesel service startsThe South Devon Railway is kicking off its 40th anniversary season on Sunday 8th February 2009 with a diesel-powered observation coach service which will run on winter Sundays in February and March. The service will appeal to countryside lovers, train enthusiasts and people who just love a trip out into the quiet Devon countryside with some great views of the river and snow laden fields following the icy weather in recent days. The heritage diesel unit, known as a ‘Bubblecar’, because of the great all round visibility it offers passengers, was originally built in the mid 1950s for use on country branch lines and local trains. It is the second season for this new winter service which was very popular last year and it will have strong appeal to people wishing to see the hidden beauties of the valley of the River Dart during the winter months. SDR staff and volunteers have been working against the clock and the bad weather to relay a half mile, 1000 sleeper length of track in time for this weekend having worked on the task solidly since early January. The Winter trains run each Sunday in February (15th and 22nd) and 1st, 8th and March 15th, plus trains are also running during half-term week on 17th, 18th and 19th February. Steam operated services restart on a daily basis from Saturday 21st March. Times of trains are on the timetable page.
