Care home residents' grand day out
As part of Plymstock School’s ‘Enrichment Week’, a group of Sixth Form students took a very active part in organising a visit for nine elderly residents from a local care home in Plymouth to the South Devon Railway and adjacent Totnes Rare Breeds Farm on Wednesday 7th July. The visit was part of the school’s continued support of ‘active citizenship’ programmes and the development of closer links with the local community. Many of the teenagers want to work in the care sector and some already have part time work in Plymouth. The head of the Sixth Form, Alan Thomas, together with nine students and a number of carers, accompanied the elderly visitors for the trip. Plymstock’s students were not only keen to be involved in the visit but also anxious to try and overcome the stereotypical image that young people don’t care about others which is often portrayed through the media. The elderly group all live at the award-winning Springfields care home in Elburton, which specialises in provision for elderly people with dementia. The trip was a great success and the steam train and Totnes Rare Breeds Farm experience brought back fond memories for the visitors. |
