Heritage Open Days

8th – 9th September 2018

See behind the scenes at Devon’s award-winning steam railway as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days event,

We’re operating an intensive, steam operated two-train service on both Saturday and Sunday, featuring classic GWR carriages and auto-coaches dating back to the 1930s on selected trains.

Visitors can view our extensive and well-equipped workshops at Buckfastleigh where steam engine boilers are rebuilt and repaired.  You can get up close and see our giant forges, presses and wheel turning lathes. Tours start at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Booking is essential.

You can also hear how we repair and maintain our carriages and take a look at where we prepare our locomotives in our running shed. Tours are at Buckfastleigh between 10am and 4pm

Our miniature railway in the garden at Buckfastleigh is celebrating 25 years of operation. Steam and diesel services will be running using a new passing loop. Take a tour of the miniature engine shed too. 10am-4pm.

The original Buckfastleigh Signal box will be open from 11am-3pm.

Visit our museum at Buckfastleigh to see Tiny, the only surviving genuine Broad Gauge engine, the Littleworth coach (built for the Monmouth Railway in 1848) and hundreds of other items of railway memorabilia.

Our track repair team will have a display in Staverton station yard. You’ll be able to look around the yard to see how they keep our track in tip-top condition and view some of the specialist equipment they use. 11am-3pm.

Visit Totnes Riverside Station and meet some of the dedicated team of volunteers who keep our stations and goods wagons in authentic BR(W) and GWR condition.

A vintage bus will take you to Ashburton (the original terminus of the line) and nearby Buckfast Abbey

Display of vintage vehicles in the station garden and forecourt

Join our team of volunteers by visiting the South Devon Railway Association stand. Lots of jobs are available to fit your skills and interests.

Our refreshment rooms and shop will also be open all day.
