Autos to Railcars 14th - 21st February 2010

The 1950s and 1960s saw the demise of steam power and the rise of diesel traction on Britain’s railways. On lightly used West Country branch lines, the traditional GWR steam push and pull ‘auto train’ – where the locomotive could be driven from a driving compartment in the carriage – was replaced by new era British Railways diesel railcars.

During half term week, as part of our celebrations for the 175th anniversary of the Great Western Railway in 2010, we’re running steam ‘auto trains’ and a railcar on the following dates:

• Sunday 14th – Thursday 18th February

Steam, using 1928-built GWR locomotive 5526 and two auto trailers in genuine 1950s colours

• Friday 19th – Sunday 21st February plus Sundays 28th February, 7th and 14th March

Using 1958-built BR ‘Bubblecar’ diesel railcar W55000 in authentic BR green livery

Remember that with no leaves on the trees, February is a great time to see our scenic line!
